The NextGen Task Force proudly presents a new podcast series entitled The Legacy Life, which is going live on September 8th 2021. NextGen has been hard at work developing a bi-weekly podcast series that is designed to introduce young professionals to the legacy (re)insurance space. It will initially be available through Apple Podcast and AIRROC’s website. Come join Task Force member Katie Reynolds as she sits down with seasoned professionals to discuss their careers, insights and their thoughts on how to better engage young professionals. Each episode is inspiring and contains nuggets of wisdom from veterans in the industry.
Our first episode features recently retired Peter Scarpato, formerly a Senior Collections Officer of Ceded Reinsurance at Ace Brandywine. Peter discusses his extensive career including how he collided with the reinsurance world. After working as a litigation attorney for a while, a friend working in reinsurance approached Peter and said his company needed lawyers. “Well, I’ve done insurance. What’s reinsurance?” Peter remembers asking. “Oh, it’s the same thing. It’s easy!” his friend replied. Peter notes that, in hindsight that may have been a bit of an exaggeration on his friend’s part.
Peter discusses his years spent as an arbitrator, and how it exposed him to a lot of people in the space. He also reflects on his work with AIRROC and how he initially became involved. Peter further shares some simple, straightforward advice for young professionals interested in the legacy (re)insurance space: talk to people working in legacy. “Get to know somebody in the legacy space,” he says. “Talk to them… Ask people about the kinds of backgrounds and degrees that would give [young professionals] a chance to be considered for these kinds of positions. You’ll be surprised.”
In addition to launching the podcast series, the NextGen Task Force is actively engaged in assisting with the 2021 Trish Getty Scholarship. 2021 marks the 10th anniversary of the scholarship, in honor of the founder and first Executive Director of AIRROC. Such engagement includes exploring opportunities to expand the reach of the scholarship via AIRROC member companies and university partnerships. The NextGen Task Force will also aid in the review process of the award.
